Sometimes, I Even Amaze Myelf

I’m not much of a camper. Well, I wasn’t much of a camper. I mean, I never thought I would enjoy camping so I never tried it, and once I did I was hooked. Sometimes, I even amaze myself.

“Hi. My name is Marilyn. I love camping.”

My daughter, Kelsey, says I cheat because there are some things that make my version of camping a little less rugged than some, but to my benefit, my camping is pretty hard-core just the same, and I like it just the way it is.

My Rough & Tumble Style

I like tent camping. No prissy doors or campers for me, and cabins are for romantic get-aways…you know, the opposite of camping, when you shave your legs and actually care what you look like when you wake up in the morning. We have a simple 6-person dome tent with walls of ventilation and a ceiling of mesh we can watch the stars and the moon through as we sleep with the sounds of nature as our white-noise.

I pack a cooler and I cook meals over the campfire. I don’t load up every dish from my kitchen, either, that’s just more to clean. If you can’t cook it over a simple grate and some aluminum foil, we’re not cooking it when I’m camping.

We sleep on the ground–essentially. A couple of blankets or a sleeping bag and a pillow is all we need. No air mattresses or egg-crate pads for us! Sure, I wake up a little stiffer in the morning that I would have had I slept on my comfy Tempurpedic mattress at home, but *HEY* this is camping!

Why My Daughter Considers My Version of Camping “GLAM-ping”

I like plumbing. OK, I said it. I can pop-a-squat if absolutely necessary, but I really prefer a toilet and actual shower. No bathing in the lake or wiping down with a moist towelette for me.  I know…I know…I’m a total camping POSER in this way, but a clean Marilyn is a happily camping Marilyn!

And, although I don’t care about lights or hair dryers or curling irons, I do admit that I want somewhere to plug in my cell phone. Granted, I know there are some handy external chargers these days, so I’ll be fine with just having that handy dandy device once I am willing to spend the cash on it. Until that day, however, I want a good old-fashioned electrical outlet for my charging cord.

Lastly, I must admit, so far I’ve only camped one night at a time. I know! I know!! I like to set up camp early, spend the day enjoying the area, build a useful and cozy fire, sleep underneath the stars (in the protection of my meshy tent), wake up, enjoy the new day, break down camp, and head home.

2016-31-3--20-45-40I like to enjoy the camping experience, so I do it in a way that I go into with excitement and leave with the glow of the relaxing time among nature, friends, and family.

Sometimes, I even amaze myself.

Until next time, my friends…

Make it a great day,

Mari!yn
